Variable-load elastic supports are devices used to support the weight of pipes that, due to thermal variations and other factors, present vertical displacements at the support points. Ca.STIm. 2000 variable-load supports essentially consist of a helical spring on which a stamped piston acts, to which the load that compresses the spring is applied. The entire assembly is enclosed in a cylindrical casing, which in turn consists of two sheet metal sections welded to two annular plates, also stamped; the casing therefore has two longitudinal slits that allow inspection of all the spring coils. From these basic products, the finished supports are obtained by inserting the tensioners and welding the attachment plates required for the various types of construction. For the type of construction described, three painting cycles are required to protect the surface of both the casing and various attachments, as well as the spring. For applications in particular environmental conditions, a different construction may be requested, involving the upper plate of the casing being connected by bolting, rather than welding. For this type of construction the springs are coated with thermoplastic materials and the casing is dip-galvanized.
